ENGL 001: Preparatory
English I |

Starting at false
beginner level, this is an intensive course designed to increase the
students’ vocabulary and introduce them to basic grammar. On
completion of the course students should be able to: construct
basic, unambiguous sentences using present, past, and future
tenses/forms, and include additional information with
prepositional/adverbial phrases; use basic modals (can, should,
must); construct negatives and questions; read and comprehend simple
texts. |

ENGL 002:
Preparatory English II |
(15-5-8) |
|
This course
recycles and builds on 001. On completion of this course students
should be able to construct more complex sentences, including the
use of passive voice and perfect tenses; use more advanced clause
and phrase constructs including time, reason, and conditions; write
basic paragraphs and understand the writing process using notes and
outlines; navigate and find information in advanced texts from
college level text books.

ENGL 101:
Composition |
(3-0-3) |
|
This is a college
level reading and writing course. Students are taught how to use
college level texts to construct paragraphs answering definition,
compare and contrast, and list type questions. Students are
expected to supplement class hours with significant time at home to
augment their vocabulary and writing skills.

ENGL 102:
Researching and Reporting |
(3-0-3) |
|
Students advance
from 101 by learning how to write multi-paragraph answers to
questions. The majority of this course is devoted to research
project writing. Students are required to complete an 800 word
research project based on an area of their major study. They
acquire skills for researching and finding relevant library
materials and resources, taking notes from multiple sources,
organising notes from multiple sources into relevant paragraphs,
word processing skills, time management skills.
